JRJI uses a restorative justice approach in its mission to bring healing to communities affected by crime and violence. These communities include offenders, victims and families of both.
Presently, there are two groups of parents supported by JRJI through periodic spiritual healing and forgiveness retreats. One group meets in the Southeast region of Los Angeles and the other in the Northwest region of Los Angeles. The parents' support groups meet quarterly on Saturdays or Sundays in a parent’s home, where a liturgy and meditation is provided. The parents whose children are incarcerated as well as parents of victims of crime attend in an effort to find healing, comfort and support in one another and share their own experiences of how God brings life out of death.
Parents of children facing life sentences are also invited to attend a Sunday Mass and a meditation with their sons led by Fr. Mike Kennedy, SJ in the high security units known as the “compound” of Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall. Through prayer and meditation, parents and their sons get an opportunity to restore broken relationships, reach reconciliation, and receive healing. So often these parents reach out to their local parish communities for support in their healing process and bring awareness to current issues in the juvenile justice system to their church communities.
JRJI has published one edition of a prayer book for incarcerated youth and their parents, which serves as a practical tool for prayer during the most stressful situations. Some of these prayers include “A Prayer before Court”, “A Prayer for My Family”, “A Prayer When I am Frustrated”, “A Parent’s Prayer”, among others. These prayer tools have helped many children, and their parents, as they transition into the adult prison system.
